Speech Tip: Fundraisers, It’s About the Kids

When fundraising, if you say to the audience, “Please give to these programs,” you risk your audience presuming your nonprofit’s executive director is making a bloated salary. If you tell that audience about how their donation will help individuals, they’ll feel better about investing in your work.

Tell success stories, stories about those presently being helped, and stories about those you intend to help.

Of course, you need to be honest about it. If, in fact, your CEO is clearing $1 million, you are being disingenuous (there are a few). Most make very little (under $50,000). The median compensation for charities included in Charity Navigator’s 2016 CEO compensation study was $123,362.

Any nonprofit has programs, but programs aren’t your point. The person receiving help is the point.

I can help with your fundraising.
